Weekly updates for Doc Halladay, C.C. Sabathia and Cliff Lee. All three were dominant as they won all their starts. Doc Halladay was extremely dominant in pitching a complete game versus the Yankees last Tuesday. C.C. followed his shutout victory with an equally impressive start against the Blue Jays. Cliff Lee needed to pitch shutout ball to get the win.
Roy Halladay (8-1, 2.78 ERA, 68.0 IP, 57 Ks, 9 starts)
No doubt in my mind that when the season ends Roy Halladay would be mentioned as a Cy Young candidate. The righty won twice this week and has pitched at least 7 innings in all of his starts. By beating the Chicago White Sox yesterday he became baseball’s first 8 game winner.
Doc Halladay pitched a beauty in beating the New York Yankees and former teammate A.J. Burnett last Tuesday. He pitched his first complete game and allowed just 5 hits with one run and 5 strikeouts. He had command of a filthy cutter and sinker in inducing 17 ground ball outs. Doc is really the Yankee killer having been 16-5 against New York.
Starting yesterday against the Chicago White Sox, Doc allowed two runs, one earned, and 6 hits in 7 innings of work. He allowed both runs in the first inning but settled down and retired the next 11 of 12 batters. The White Sox threatened in the 4th, 5th and 6th innings as they had the lead off man on base each time. But Doc was not the one to give in and stranded the runner.
Doc Halladay was disappointed at his last outing yet he was in cruise control after the first inning. He lowered his ERA to 2.78 and leads the majors with 68 innings pitched. Really a workhorse and an ace.
C.C. Sabathia (3-3, 3.70 ERA, 56.0 IP, 37 Ks, 8 starts)
C.C. Sabathia is on a roll. After blanking the Baltimore Orioles in his previous start, he shut down the powerful Blue Jays offense. His only mistakes were a fourth inning homerun by Alex Rios and a Rod Barajas double that scored Scott Rolen. The win evened his season record to 3-3.
C.C. pitched 8 innings allowing 5 hits and 2 runs. He still having issues with control as evidenced by the 4 walks he allowed. He struck out 5. He has won consecutive starts for the first time this year and the Yankees are hoping that C.C. has turned the corner and starts winning. C.C. is a horse and Girardi can expect 7 or 8 innings from him. That bodes well for the Yankees as their bullpen is horsespit. Jose Veras can’t get anybody out and even the great Mariano Rivera gives up homeruns.
Cliff Lee (2-5, 3.00 ERA, 54.0 IP, 42 Ks, 8 starts)
The only way for Cliff Lee can win games this year is by pitching a shutout. He has pitched brilliantly in his last four starts but the anemic Cleveland Indians cannot score runs for him. He was 0-4 with a 1.74 ERA in his last four starts allowing just 6 runs. With any club, he would have been 4-0 during the stretch. But the Indians have been horrible offensively and scored just 2 runs for him.
That changed somehow when the Indians doubled the run support he received in his last four starts combined. The Indians scored 4 runs and Cliff Lee pitched seven shutout innings in winning just for the second time this season. He scattered six hits none of them hard contacts and struck out a season high 9 batters. He lowered his ERA to 3.00. He has pitched at least 7 innings in his last 5 starts. He has allowed just 7 runs in his last 6 starts after allowing 11 runs in his first two starts. Lee is finding his groove but he cannot win some games if the Indians continue to be horrible with the bat.
